- Energy audit or air sealing
Sealing the house before sizing a heat pump is the step most installs skip. A blower door test measures how leaky the house is, and air sealing and insulation shrink the heating load. A smaller load means a smaller, quieter heat pump that keeps up in a cold snap.
The companies below say on their own websites that they do energy audits or assessments, blower door tests, air sealing or insulation. Some are HVAC contractors that added home performance work. Others are home performance companies that also install heat pumps.
Maryland homeowners can ask whether the audit runs through their utility's EmPOWER Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program at BGE, Pepco, Delmarva Power, Potomac Edison or SMECO. DC homeowners can ask about the DC Sustainable Energy Utility. Ask for the blower door number before and after the work, and make sure the heat pump is sized for the house after sealing, not before.

In Maryland, look up the company with the State Board of HVACR Contractors, and for home improvement contracts the Maryland Home Improvement Commission. In Virginia, HVAC tradesmen must hold state certification from the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation, and contracting businesses are licensed by its Board for Contractors. In Washington DC, the Office of the Attorney General advises that refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics need a trade license and that most home improvement work needs a District permit. This directory does not verify licenses. Ask for the license number and look it up before you sign, and ask for a Manual J load calculation before anyone sizes a heat pump.
